Is pilates overrated?
Is pilates overrated? No. Pilates is not overrated, and in this post, I will tell you why and recommend the best online Pilates instructors.
What actually is Pilates?
Pilates is a complex of low-impact exercises. This practice enhances physical strength, flexibility, and posture through controlled movements combined with intentional breathing. It was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, and it was first called "Contrology".
My personal experience
Physical activity is extremely important to me in order to feel good, both on the outside and on the inside. I spent almost my entire life dancing, but eventually I reached a point where competitive dance no longer fulfilled me. I wanted to find a new way to keep my body moving as soon as possible.
The gym was an immediate, big NO. I don’t like the gym, and I know I wouldn’t be able to stay consistent with it – which is key to any kind of training. I searched for a long time to find the right activity because I’m not someone who enjoys traditional sports like volleyball, handball, and similar.
At that time, I was also trying to lose weight, but no type of workout was bringing results. I eventually realized that I had been unnecessarily overloading my body with excessive cardio. I used to believe that a workout was only “good” if I was out of breath and dripping with sweat afterward.
Then I discovered Pilates.
For a while, I practiced mat Pilates at a nearby studio, and it was a true revelation for me. Although I no longer train there due to my current obligations, the love for Pilates that I felt during that time has stayed with me. I learned that the goal isn’t to do as many exercises as possible, but to perform each one with full focus and complete awareness.
Pilates places a strong emphasis on breathing and on engaging the core in every movement. I quickly realized that Pilates is not nearly as easy as it may look at first glance. I began noticing results—not only in the toning of my legs and abs, but also in my breathing and posture.
And best of all, it never feels hard to roll out my Pilates mat every day.
My biggest recommendation for an online instructor is Move with Nicole. I found 2–3 videos that I rotate, but her channel offers such a wide variety that everyone can find something that suits them. She also has videos for days when you’re not feeling your best and simply don’t have the motivation for a full workout.
So no-Pilates isn’t overrated. It’s just often misunderstood.
